RECYCLING

Children learn about the importance of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and actively participate in making a better world for us all.   We have allocated recycling boxes in the nursery and children dispose of materials appropriately.

Examples of this is when children finish their yogurt at lunch time, they wash the tubs and place them in the ‘plastic’ box, usually with no need for prompting. These can then either be reused when doing art work or recycled.

Pre-schoolers take the recycling boxes to the nearest recycling point just up the road from the nursery for it to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

MODESHIFT STARS – The National Schools Travel Awards

Modeshift STARS is a scheme, supported by the Department for Transport, which recognises schools, businesses and other organisations that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.

La Casita has been working towards these awards and currently holds the bronze award. We provide regular scooting and cycling sessions for our pre-schoolers, held at Wish Park, which offer children a hands-on experience about safety as well as developing their balance, stamina, gross motor skills and observational skills.

WATER AID – The importance of water

It’s a well-known fact that young children love water play and at La Casita is no exception.

However, water must be used responsibly by us all as right now, some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised people don’t have clean water to drink and 785 million people in the world do not have clean water close to home.

At La Casita we do talk about the importance of water and how lucky we are to have a never-ending supply coming of our taps.

To be more water efficient, all our toilets are fitted with water-saving devices and a water butt to collect rainwater off your roof has been installed, as using rainwater in the garden also reduces the amount of treated water we use.

La Casita donates monthly and fundraises for Water Aid.

GROWING FRUIT & VEG

Part of working for a better tomorrow, it’s to teach children about sustainability. At La Casita we have three fruit trees and a vegetable plot. Children help with the whole process by preparing the soil, planting, growing, maintaining and watering the plants.

Each year, children choose which vegetables we get to plant and look after them.  We harvest and share the products at snack time, educating on the importance of eating fruit and vegetables in order to keep healthy.

Children understand the importance of healthy lifestyles extremely well through activities such as discussions about healthy eating and oral health.
